冰川天女传 / Peng Tjoan Thian Lie (Hokkien) / Bidadari Sungai Es (Bahasa Indonesia) or The Legend of Glacier Maiden Fairy, is a wuxia story setting during the reign on Qianlong Emperor of Qing Dynasty.
The story is about the The Glacial Maiden Fairy - a daughter of Nepalese Princess and a swordsman from Tianshan school. During that time, Qianlong Emperor sent some people to escort the holy relics of Lama - a golden urn to Tibet Lhasa. Many martial artists from China, Tibet, Nepal, and India fought over the golden urn for their own purposes. The Glacial Maiden Fairy saw the good intention of the Qing court to send the golden urn, and she helped to protect the relic. She then began to know Tang Jingtian, a son of famous swordsman from Tianshan school. The Golden Urn refers to a method introduced since the 18th century to select Tibetan Living Buddha. In Tibet, on several occasions, some children believed to be the reincarnations of the Dalai Lama or the Panchen Lama. But since they have to choose one, then this "lottery method" is used. The names of the competing candidates are written on folded slips of paper placed in a golden urn (thus having the name), and the senior lama priest would take one paper from the golden urn to determine who's going to be the Living Buddha. This method originated in a decree issued by the Qianlong Emperor in 1792, and was used in the selection of Dalai Lamas, Panchen Lamas and Hutuktus. After defeating the Gurkha invasion in 1792, the Qianlong Emperor issuedThe 29-Article Imperial Decree for Better Governing in Tibet, in which Article One ordered the new protocol for deciding the reincarnations of the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama. The Ghurka invasion in Tibet (1792) is also mentioned in this novel. Most of the adventures in this novel located in Tibet (Lhasa, Namtso, Nyenchen Tanghla), Tianshan and Sichuan. I don't know if Liang Yusheng, the author ever visited Tibet or not. But the way he described the locations is so real. Also, readers could learn a lot about Tibet, the nature, landscape, and their custom. I had a chance to visit Tibet in late autumn 2017, and I really love it. |
